Summertime is right around the corner and that probably means you’re starting to plan for your summer vacation. Enjoy some time off without completely draining your savings with a close-to-home, staycation. Here are some staycation ideas to make your time off well worth it and relaxing. For your staycation, pick one or create a combination of these ideas.

Outdoor Staycation Ideas

Go Glamping

This may be a more costly activity, but consider renting a camper or RV. Have the feel of vacationing out of the house while still having to the comforts of home. Whether you “glamp” in a campground or local park, consider pairing your camping with other activities nearby.

Visit a Park or Trail

Visiting a park or trail would be a great staycation idea to pair with glamping or to occupy a good portion of your day off. Visit a local park or trail to do some hiking, biking, sightseeing, or even enjoy the wide-open space to relax and indulge.

Outdoor Picnic

Outdoor picnics are on our list as a “must try” for staycations. Whether you are camping or simply in the backyard, prepare your favorite snacks almost potluck style and enjoy a meal outside. If you are able, consider grilling or doing outside hibachi.

Try a New Sport/Activity

This staycation tip can be as much or as little as you make it. Trying out a new sporting activity or something your family all loves is a fun and interactive way to staycation. Here are some ideas out of the normal sporting games or activities for you to try:

  • Goat Yoga

  • Badminton Tournament

  • Bags Tournament

  • Horseback Riding

  • Canoeing

  • Rent a Boat

  • Fishing

  • Biking

  • Waterpark Day

Outdoor Theatre or Concert

Either going to a drive-in theatre or creating your own in the backyard is a MUST. An extra tip for this activity would be to pair up the outdoor picnic idea or create your perfect popcorn bar to enjoy through the movie. If movies aren’t your thing, summer is the best time for outdoor concerts, and some can be free to fairly cheap. Look up outdoor concerts or town festivals in your area to enjoy.

Indoor Staycation Ideas

Food Tour

One of the best parts of vacation is the food. Even if you are doing a staycation, you can still enjoy trying new foods and indulging. Spend a day trying new places or menu items at your favorite or a new spot. If you are of the age, try out local breweries or a winery.

Game Tournament

If you are hanging out  with your family or multiple people, consider creating a game tournament. Whether you play a variety of card games, board games, or video games this can be a good competition day to incorporate.

Spa Day

A big part of vacation is the element of relaxation. Delegating a morning or afternoon to splurge a little on self-care is a great idea to have some ‘you’ time. If you don’t have much for spa options close by, this would also be an activity you could put on at home with your preference of products and services.

Be a Tourist in Your Town

Life can get busy, so maybe it’s time to visit that new restaurant you’ve been wanting to try or the local art museum. Take a day to visit new or touristy places in town to enjoy when you have the time.

Home Improvement/DIY

The goal is to relax and not necessarily work over vacation, but for the busybodies out there, maybe your staycation is an opportunity to create something for your home, re-decorate, put together some furniture, do some deep cleaning, or a home improvement task on your list.

Budgeting your staycation can be a breeze because you are in full control of your spending as you will not have to worry much about hotel fees, gas, or travel costs. Create a plan, pick your activities, and research the best prices for the ultimate budget-friendly staycation. Get creative and collaborate to curate the most fun and relaxing staycation whether you’re going out or staying in.
